More than 10 000 faithful will gather in Johannesburg this weekend for the installation of Cardinal Stephen Brislin as the new Catholic Archbishop of Johannesburg.

This will be held at Saint Benedict’s College in Bedfordview in Gauteng on Saturday from 9am.

Brislin takes over from Bishop Buti Tlhagale who served the archdiocese for 21 years prior to his retirement.

Brislin previously served as the Archbishop of Cape Town for 15 years and before then as Bishop of Kroonstad from 2007-2009.

Father Mduduzi Ndlovu, the administrator of the Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church in Johannesburg says, “All the bishops, 30-plus bishops will be there. The faithful, over 10 000, dignitaries, many of them will witness him being installed as Archbishop of Johannesburg. And the following day on the Sunday at 2pm here at the Cathedral Christ the King which is now his Cathedral – he will take possession of that. Those two events mark him becoming Archbishop of Johannesburg.”
