Police Minister Senzo Mchunu
Former SCOPA Chairperson Themba Godi says what was said by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi during the media briefing held yesterday is a bombshell no one expected and a proper inquiry should be conducted.
During the briefing, Mkhwanazi accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of being in constant contact with individuals linked to criminal activities.
He also accused some senior police officials of being involved in corruption.
Godi says President Cyril Ramaphosa has not done much to deal with allegations of corruption in the police.
“I mean there’s always been suspicions about previous ministers’ involvement. But the starkness of what General Mkhwanazi presented, is too interesting to be ignored or to be dismissed off hand. I think he has opened a jelly box bottle. I don’t think anybody can dismiss this off hand. We’ve seen already the response from some ANC leaders pointing in the direction of a coverup. But I think the public disgust with crime levels and with corruption will be so strong that there will have to be an enquiry.”
Meanwhile, the South African Policing Union (SAPU) has raised concerns about the public allegations made by Mkhwanazi against Mchunu.
SAPU National Spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale says these are serious allegations and they are calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene.
“Such allegations or such issues they don’t get to be publicised through the media or even for public consumption. So, the intervention of the President in this regard since these allegations they are also touching on the Executive, they also touching on the Deputy National Commissioner, they are also touching further to the justice system, so they have something to do with the integrity also the national security of the country. So, they need to be treated with sensitiveness”.
