The Boksburg Magistrate’s Court, east of Johannesburg, has ruled that it will only grant the media permission to record audio and not film the court proceedings of a case against a man accused of raping and impregnating an 11-year-old.

Media organizations, including the SABC, had applied to broadcast proceedings wherein the 29-year-old accused was expected to apply for bail.

The victim is now four months pregnant after she was allegedly raped by the accused in Boksburg in December last year.

The case has been postponed to Thursday next week for the accused’s bail application.

The magistrate says the application by broadcast media to televise proceedings was made very late.

Lawyer for the accused also objected to the media request to televise proceedings.

As the proceedings unfolded – the accused sat in the dock appearing calm and distraught.

DNA tests are yet to determine whether the 29-year-old is the alleged perpetrator. The victim’s family alleges this is not the first time the accused allegedly raped the minor.

That the alleged abuse started when the young girl was only 6 years old.”
