Body of missing swimmer recovered in Sedgefield

Western Cape rescue authorities have recovered the body of a man believed to have gone missing while swimming in Sedgefield.

A 20-year-old Eastern Cape man went missing under water on Saturday.

The man was caught in rip currents while swimming with friends.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon says the formal identification is underway and an inquest docket has been opened.

“During an ongoing search operation, police divers assisted by SAPS, community-orientated policing volunteers, and NSRI Wilderness crew, located and recovered a body at Sedgefield.

“While formal identification of the body is in progress, it is believed that the body located and recovered by police divers is the 20-year-old Eastern Cape man who went missing while swimming at Sedgefield on Saturday, 14 December. Western Cape government health EMS and government health forensic pathology services attended the scene. The body of the deceased man was taken into the care of police and government health forensic pathology services,” Lambinon explains.
