BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato
The Border Management Authority (BMA) says it has partnered with several government departments to strengthen border security ahead of the Easter holidays.
The authority says it expects increased movement of travellers entering and leaving South Africa, particularly to neighbouring countries.
BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato says departments including Social Development, Tourism and Public Works are working together to address cross-border challenges.
“To tackle the cross border social challenges particularly safeguarding minors we have partnered with Social Development. In addition we welcome partnership with the Department of Tourism wherein they deployed safety officers to enhance seamless flow of traveler movement within the port environment,” said Masiapato.
He says advanced security measures have been deployed to monitor activity at ports of entry.
“For proactive measures to curb corruption as BMA we shall continue to use technology such as drones and body cams. Furthermore the introduction of secure stamps has indicated that it’s critical because our stamps have a unique number allocated to a particular immigration officer which means that should any passport issued illegally without that person being processed we are able to link that particular stamp to the official and that official will be held accountable,” he adds.
Masiapato also warns officials against facilitating illegal activities, saying those found to be involved will face consequences.

Extended border hours
The BMA has extended hours of operation at major ports of entry during the long Easter weekend. It says the human, cargo and small vehicle traffic is expected to rise across the major ports from Wednesday.
Masiapato says they are expecting about 25 000 travellers a day.
During the 2025 Easter period, the agency says it recorded 11 million travellers, with Gauteng and Limpopo provinces leading the movements.
Masiapato says drones and other technical facilities will be used to avert illegal activities and to complement officers’ safety efforts on the ground.
