Team of Blitzboks.
The South African Sevens rugby team were beaten 14-7 by Spain in the bronze medal play-off match to settle for fourth place at the Perth leg of the World Rugby Sevens series in Australia.
However, Selvyn Davids, hit back one minute later to level matters for the Blitzboks.
The two teams were level at 7-ALL at half-time. Davids managed to give the Blitzboks a hard-fought lead in the ninth minute.
But youngster Sidney Harvey struck for the tournament hosts late in the contest with the match going into extra time.
Aden Ekanayake won the restart and the Aussies controlled possession from there.
A yellow card to Ryan Oosthuizen didn’t help the Blitzboks’ cause during a crucial period of the match.
In the end, it was Ekanayake who once again made a game-changing play. He sliced through the defensive line to score the winner…
Spain then beat South Africa 14-7 in the bronze medal play-off match to claim third place. The Spaniards outscored the Blitzboks by two tries to one to clinch the bronze medal.
Davids scored a try to level matters after Spain had taken the lead earlier…
Jaime Manteca scored a try late in the match to help Spain record only their second win over the Blitzboks to clinch the bronze medal.
Earlier, the Blitzboks narrowly lost 12-17 to Australia in extra time in the semi-final match.
Meanwhile, Argentina beat the hosts, Australia, 41-5 to win gold. Los Pumas led 17-0 at half-time after scoring three unanswered tries.
And proved too strong for Australia, making it two in a row in Perth.
Not the result we hoped for against Spain, but the #Blitzboks will regroup and come back stronger – more here: 💪
