Bekkersdal mass shooting case postponed

The case against five accused in the Bekkersdal shooting has been postponed to the 22nd of January in the Westonaria Magistrate Court for further investigations.

They were found in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition following a mass shooting at KwaNoxolo tavern on Gauteng’s West Rand.

Gauteng Police Spokesperson, Mavela Masondo, says they are still investigating whether the accused are linked to the shooting incident which claimed 10 lives.

An identity parade is yet to be conducted as witnesses were not found at their addresses and also not reachable on their cellphones.

Masondo says they have sent the firearms for ballistic testing.

“Remember, when we arrested them, we found them in possession of four pistols and one AK47 and we know that during the shooting, the pistols were used and an AK47 was used, hence we suspect that they might be responsible for the shooting at Bekkersdal. We have also sent those firearms for ballistic testing to establish if those firearms are linked to serious and violent crimes including that of Bekkersdal.”
