Batohi withholds name of suspended prosecutor linked to syndicates

The head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Advocate Shamila Batohi has refused to disclose the name of a suspended prosecutor who is alleged to be working with criminal syndicates.

Batohi is testifying before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the justice system.

Batohi has requested to divulge the name in camera.

“But even if the name is given to me now, I am not going to make a comment on whether it is or not. It’s not fair. It’s not fair on the process. It’s not fair on the person concerned. And this might turn out not to be true. We may not be able to verify this information and then it destroys people’s reputation, lives and I think it will be hugely irresponsible for me at this stage with this bit of information that I heard that I have referred it to mention names in this house.”
