Basic Education to intervene in maths-less schools

The Basic Education Department says it’s working with all provincial education departments to address challenges related to teaching mathematics in schools.

This after it was revealed that 464 schools in the country do not offer mathematics as a subject.

This has been attributed to a lack of resources and low demand for the subject.

The department’s Seliki Tlhabane says government will implement strategic interventions at schools that have dropped the subject.

“Our focus will be on these schools that have dropped the subject altogether to see how we can assist them, to ensure that they encourage learners to offer the subject by ensuring that teachers who are qualified in those schools ensure that the subject is offered.

We will supply all the necessary resources. Schools particularly from quintile one to three are getting free resources from government.

So that the resources are not the reason why learners are not doing the subject”.
