Bafana Bafana’s run at AFCON comes to an end

South Africa’s run at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco has come to a disappointing end.

Five-time AFCON champions, Cameroon, beat the 2024 bronze medalists, Bafana Bafana, 2-1 in their Round of 16 match in Rabat.

Bafana Bafana were by far the better side in the opening fifteen minutes, but the Indomitable Lions absorbed the pressure, settled into a rhythm and struck either side of halftime.

Junior Baptiste Tshamadeu and 19-year-old Christian Kofane scored in the 34th and 55th minutes, respectively, while Evidence Makgopa netted a late consolation goal for Bafana in the 88th minute.

Bafana will be coming home with a lot to reflect on ahead of the FIFA World Cup in the Americas later this year, while Cameroon marches on.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says they had the right plan for the game as they had three clear chances.

“What can I say, everyone is very disappointed and sad that we’re eliminated today, we had the right plan, everyone saw that. We had three open chances in the half hour. Normally, the game should be done by then but when you miss that, you pay for it.”

Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster believes that they played very well, but they were just unlucky.

“Not the best, but we now need to focus and try and regroup. We did very well, we started the game very well. Tactically, I think the way they played, we matched it and surprised them a little bit.”
