Bafana Bafana starts AFCON 2025 campaign on a high note

South Africa have won an opening match of an Africa Cup of Nations tournament for the first time in 21 years to start their 2025 campaign on a high note.

Bafana Bafana who won bronze in Ivory Coast last year, beat Angola 2-1 in their first Group B match of the tournament played at Stade de Marrakesh in Morocco.

Although Bafana opened the scoring in the 21st minute through Oswin Appollis, they played second fiddle to Angola who created more opportunities in the first half and equalised in the 35th minute.

But Bafana settled and dominated proceedings in the second half.

A goal by Tshepang Moremi was denied after VAR intervened, before Lyle Foster scored the winner 28 minutes later.

The second half performance will give Hugo Broos’ team a lot of confidence ahead of their second match against seven-time champions, Egypt, in Agadir on Friday.
