As South Africa prepares for the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, the family of Bafana Bafana Captain Ronwen Williams has expressed immense pride in his achievements and leadership.
They say his journey is a testament to hard work, discipline and belief, and have voiced strong confidence in the national team’s ability to lift the AFCON trophy for the first time in nearly 30 years.
The tournament starts on Sunday in Morocco.
According to the family, the current squad is driven by a strong winning mentality, unity and resilience, qualities they believe set this team apart.
Willliam’s uncle and former coach Maurice Camelio shared his pride.
He says, “I think it was last year when I said Ronwin there’s something missing in your career, it’s a World Cup appearance, he said they are working hard on it so I assume it’s the people in Bafana Bafana, and really we as the family are really proud.”
EVIDENCE MAKGOPA
The family of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates player Evidence Makgopa, who is from Ga-Mampa Village outside Burgersfort in Limpopo has wished the national team well.
Evidence’s father Chichila says he is proud that his son was selected in the team and he is supporting him and the team all the way.
He says, “What I want to say that God knows everything. I wish him good luck. The most important thing is for him to follow all the instructions given by the coach. I’ve been watching him since he was 8-years-old, and the way he played soccer, you could tell he’s got talent.”
Some residents from Ga-Mampa where Makgopa grew up have also expressed excitement that one of their own is participating in the tournament.
One resident says, “As community members, we’re happy to see him moving forward, and I hope South Africa is happy about this too. We hope he’ll keep doing what he did last time at AFCON.”
Another says, “I grew up with Evidence Makgopa and he’s my neighbour. We, his fans, wish him all the best as he’s going to play in AFCON.”
