Backlog of breast reduction surgeries due to lack of specialists in Limpopo: MEC

Limpopo Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego says the province has a backlog of breast reduction surgeries due to a lack of specialists.

Mashego says that they only have one plastic surgeon in the province.

MEC Mashego says that plans are underway to train and hire more plastic surgeons in the province to bring relief to more women.

Mashego says they are currently training their own doctors, so that they can have specialists, stating that it is difficult to attract specialists to a rural province.

Meanwhile, a woman who was living with unusually large breasts says her life has now changed for the better, following a successful breast reduction surgery performed at Mankweng Hospital outside Polokwane two months ago.

When SABC News reported about her plight in July, household chores and physical activities were daunting for 39-year-old Naledi Mabotha.

Mabotha suffered from chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain.

She also experienced skin rashes and infections.

Doctors at Mankweng hospital removed 13 kilograms of breast tissue from Mabotha during her surgery.

She says this surgery has improved the quality of her life.

“I’m feeling happy because now the breasts are no longer big and everything that I wasn’t able to do, now I can do. I can clean the yard. I can do anything in the house. I’m very happy and the back pain that I used to get last time now it is gone,” says Mabotha.
