Authorities to meet families of Limpopo bus crash victims

Officials from Zimbabwe and Malawi embassies and the Limpopo provincial government are expected to meet on Monday with the families of the 43 people killed in a  bus crash outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo last Sunday.

The overloaded bus was ferrying over 90 people.

It crashed on the N1 on its way from Qheberha to Zimbabwe and Malawi.

The Limpopo Premier’s Spokesperson, Thilivhali Muavha, says the aim is to support the families as they identify the remains of the deceased.

“This meeting marks the next phase in the identification process, following the completion of post-mortem examinations conducted by the Forensic Pathology Services. The South African Police Service (SAPS) Victim Identification Centre has also commenced scientific identification procedures, including DNA analysis and fingerprint matching, in partnership with authorities from Zimbabwe and Malawi. The Limpopo Provincial Government continues to offer psychosocial support services to affected families, including trauma counseling, through the Department of Social Development, while logistical arrangements are being coordinated through the Provincial Disaster Management Centre,” says Muavha.
