A roadblock to check vehicles and drivers.
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has once again raised concerns over the issue of drunk driving on the province’s roads. 450 motorists have been arrested for driving under the influence since the 12th of this month.
Department Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, says lawbreakers will be dealt with decisively.
“Each of the 451 drunk and driving arrests represents a conscience decision to break the law and endanger lives. Our message is if you drink and drive in our province, you will be arrested and you may well spend your Christmas behind bars. We are pleading with you, do not drink and drive, and please play by the rules at all times.”
Meanwhile, about 60 motorists will appear in courts in Mpumalanga today after they were arrested for alleged drunk driving in the province over the weekend.
Traffic authorities are conducting operations in various parts of Mpumalanga as part of the festive season safety campaigns.
Community Safety, Security and Liaison Spokesperson Moeti Mmusi says most of the suspects were arrested in the Nkangala Region.
“So far, through various operations that we have, as part of improving and enhancing road safety on the road, we have arrested about 88 people for allegedly drinking and driving. And then between 1 and 20 December, 60 of these people were arrested this weekend alone. 50 of them were arrested in the Nkangala Region, while we had 10 in the Gert Sibande District,” says Mmusi.
