ATM calls for harsher penalties for child abusers

The African Transformation Movement (ATM) is calling for harsher penalties for heinous crimes, including child pornography.

Last week, police in Mpumalanga arrested a man after finding him in possession of 56 000 child abuse images and videos.

Police officers also confiscated licenced firearms.

The 59-year-old man is expected to appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga today for a bail application.

The ATM has strongly condemned the crime, calling it a stark reminder of the urgent need to protect children.

ATM MP Vuyolwethu Zungula says, “The sexual offences register needs to be made public because such people walk around us. There may be our teachers in school or people who are caring for the young and vulnerable children. The biggest issue is that the trauma they inflict on these children ends up affecting the children and they continue impacting the lives of other people as well, from them being molested and being treated in that manner. There needs to be harsher penalties for people committing these heinous acts against children, women and people living with disabilities.”
