Apartheid Museum to unveil exhibition on TRC injustice

The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg is set to unveil a new exhibition titled Grave Injustice: The Unfinished Business of the TRC.

The exhibition, which opens on Heritage Day, highlights the ongoing struggle for justice and reparations since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission concluded in 2003.

In January this year, 25 families of apartheid-era victims filed a lawsuit against the government seeking R167 million in constitutional damages for government’s failure to pursue justice.

Executive Director of the Foundation for Human Rights, Zaid Kimmie, says: “The exhibition is a testament to the long struggle of these families, who have lost their loved ones, but never gave up in their quest for justice. Of course, I think the Apartheid Museum on its own will be well worth a visit, because it does tell that long story of struggle against apartheid and it does it very well.”

“I think this exhibition takes the story forward, because the Apartheid Museum story ends with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission- and its findings- and this I think completes the story to some extent, although the story is still ongoing,” adds Kimmie.
