Former City of Cape Town mayor and anti-apartheid stalwart, Theresa Solomons, has died at the age of 79.
She served as deputy mayor in the city from 1995 t0 1996; and then served as mayor from 1996 to 1998.
Solomons, who was born in 1945 in Cape Town, dedicated her life to the struggle for justice and equality.
She was part of several movements in the Western Cape including the Black Women’s Organisation and helped to set up several civic organisations which eventually merged into one umbrella civic organisation, the Cape Areas Housing Action Committee.
She later served as South Africa’s High Commissioner to Tanzania and Canada.
Family spokesperson Neil Cole says she will be remembered for her unwavering commitment to social justice and her love for the people of South Africa.
