Steve Vukile Tshwete Games Netball team
The Eastern Cape Sports Department has hosted the annual Steve Vukile Tshwete Games to revive sport amongst the youth and keep them active in various sports field in Gqeberha.
The tournaments featured different sporting codes such as soccer, rugby, netball and the ever-popular goal ball, a sport for people with disabilities.
The games also seek to nurture talent as the best players are selected after the games.
Sports and Recreation MEC, Sibulele Ngongo says despite the dilapidated sporting fields due to vandalism, they are still able to nurture talent through these games.
“If you look at the quality of the play here in the ground you can see that there is something that is being done, our athletes or players are doing a lot behind the scenes. It means that we are playing indeed and we are also encouraging our sport confederations to say colleagues, let us put more effort in coordinating with these young ones because we can see that the talent is there. We are still struggling in terms of the stadium and playgrounds, however we have seen that with the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and Buffalo City, we can see the difference.”
