Angola’s national football team beat South Africa 3-nil at the Free State stadium on Sunday, to successfully defend their COSAFA Cup title. A goal in both halves by the tournament’s leading goal scorer, Aurelio Depu, and another by Milson sealed the victory for the defending champions in Bloemfontein.

The hosts were eager to get an early goal. They launched an attack on the left flank with midfilder, Kamogelo Sebelebele, proving to be a handful for the Angolan defenders. However, the Angolan defence eventually dealt with the danger.

The South Africans launched another attack moments later with Pule Dithejane receiving a ball while in a good position. The defending champions’ defence stood their ground and never allowed the South Africans any space.

It was one-way traffic with the Angolans defending and Bafana Bafana denied by the crossbar on this occasion.

While the hosts had dictated the pace of the game and attacked the most, it was the defending champions who took the lead.

The tournament’s leading goal scorer, Aurelio Depu, headed home, beating keeper Thakasani Mbanjwa, from close range.

Bafana Bafana had a chance to level matters in the second half. But it wasn’t to be with Ime Okon’s attempt going wide.

Angola doubled their lead with Depu beating Mbanjwa after a defensive slip-up by Bafana Bafana.

The hosts had a chance to slash Angola’s lead. But keeper Adilson Cipriano da Cruz, pulled off a great save to deny Boitumelo Radiopane a goal.

Instead, it was the defending champions who scored a third goal with substitute Milson beating Mbanjwa.

The match ended 3-nil with the Angolans winning a second consecutive COSAFA Cup title.
