The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) is in support of an EFF electoral reform proposal that proposes that all South Africans above the age of 18 years automatically be registered with the Independent Election Commission (IEC).
EFF President Julius Malema, over the weekend, announced a number of electoral reforms that they will be tabling in Parliament before the end of this month.
ANCYL President Collen Malatji says it might be a step in the right direction to encourage young South Africans to vote.
“I don’t think it’s a bad idea. We must not always oppose everything from the opposition because most of the people on the day of voting … that is the day they want to run around and go and vote. In most cases, when we mobilize them to go and vote, they are not doing that. But on the day when there’s a high of ‘let’s go and vote’, a lot of young people, women, and old people who have not registered. I think it’s something that we can engage on and engage the IEC on it and check if it’s implementable. I think it’s something that as the Youth League we are ready to support,” says Malatji.
The EFF has always proposed combining the national and provincial elections with the local government elections to allow more parties an opportunity to focus on service delivery instead of campaigning after every two or three years.
