ANC SG Fikile Mbalula at an event
African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula has summoned the Free State party leadership to Luthuli House in Johannesburg.
This comes after it announced the redeployment of some mayors, chief whips and speakers of seven municipalities.
The affected municipalities include Mafube, Moqhaka, Letsemeng, Nketoana, Nala, Masilonyana and Lejweleputswa.
Last month, the Provincial Working Committee resolved to take strong action against under-performing municipalities.
This followed highlighted failures in the Auditor General’s report and Parliament’s Co-operative Governance Portfolio Committee’s oversight visit.
The decision of the ANC in the Free State to redeploy some mayors, speakers and whips from distressed municipalities has sparked defiance from some who are yet to hand over their resignation letters as instructed by the party.
As a result, the mayors of Mafube, Moqhaka and Masilonyana party memberships have been suspended for refusing to resign.
