The African National Congress (ANC) leaders, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, will visit Robben Island today to kick off the party’s 113th birthday celebrations.
The visit aims to honour the resilience and sacrifices of freedom fighters who were incarcerated on the island for their resilience and sacrifice.
After Robben Island, they will attend the ANC’s main celebration of the day, the cake-cutting ceremony, at the Athlone Civic Centre in Cape Town.

On the 8th of January 1912, the South African Native National Congress (SANNC) was formed at the Wesleyan Church in Waaihoek, Bloemfontein, Free State. It later became known as the African National Congress in 1923.
The ANC became the largest liberation organisation in the struggle for freedom and justice in South Africa and the oldest liberation movement in Africa.
The party has faced many challenges, including internal leadership struggles and declining electoral support, in recent years.
