ANC welcomes ceasefire agreement between Israel, Hamas

The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed the ceasefire agreement that Israel and Hamas signed. It will see an end to the conflict that has led to thousands of people killed.

Last night Israel’s Cabinet approved a deal with Hamas for a ceasefire and the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip.

The implementation is expected to take effect on Sunday.

ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula says South Africa has been pushing for a ceasefire for months since Pretoria took the matter to the International Court of Justice.

“Those who have undertaken the mayhem of perpetuating the genocide must be brought to book. We went to the International Court of Justice in South Africa. May the developments of the ceasefire propel us to realise a long-lasting solution which is the self-determination of the Palestinian people. We are among other nations within the United Nations that are proponents of the two-state solution.”

The National Executive Committee of the ANC is meeting this weekend in Boksburg to chart a way forward after its January 8 statement and birthday celebrations.

One of the issues likely to top the agenda is further discussions on whether the KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng Provincial Executive Committees should be disbanded after the provinces’ poor performance at the polls last year.
