Africa’s oldest liberation movement, the African National Congress (ANC), has turned 114.
Party President Cyril Ramaphosa is in Rustenburg in the North West, where the party’s anniversary celebrations are scheduled to take place this weekend.
Following the 2024 general election, the ANC lost its majority in Parliament for the first time in South Africa’s democratic history.
However, it remains the largest party with over 40% of the vote.
Service delivery failures and allegations of corruption have plagued the party, which is now in a coalition with opposition parties.
On Wednesday, ANC Treasurer-General Dr Gwen Ramokgopa said the party will use its 114th anniversary celebrations to reflect on its achievements and shortfalls.
She accompanied Ramaphosa to a fundraising golf game in Sun City in Rustenburg in the North West.
“We have reflected as the NEC and we are ready to share with the nation what our reflections are, the successes which are many, and the challenges which we are decisively dealing with… also some of the external challenges in the political environment that we live in,” Ramokgopa added.
