The poor state of local government in the North West is on the agenda at a summit organised by the African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Executive Committee in Potchefstroom.
The summit is taking place ahead of the provincial lekgotla, which is expected to be held from Sunday to Monday.
Many municipalities in the province are dysfunctional, with municipalities such as Ditsobotla, Tswaing and Mamusa among those that are failing to pay their workers.
ANC provincial chairperson Nono Maloyi says the aim of the summit is to address the needs of the North West residents.
“The purpose of this summit is to put our heads together and say what is it that we need to do as deployees of the African National Congress, but secondly as servants of the people, to ensure that we attend to the needs of our people in the North West province. You will recall that we did speak about challenges that we are facing, whether it is potholes, challenges of water, streetlights that are not working and so on, so we are doing that assessment.”

Maloyi says some of the dysfunctional municipalities in the province might be dissolved.
“We might consider a lot of things and one of these options might be dis-establishments, that is why we have invited the demarcation board to come and make presentations in order to assist us to be able to make proper decisions. We have not taken that decision, those are things we will discuss in this summit, but secondly, we’ll discuss those things in the ANC and take the necessary decisions,” explains Maloyi.
