ANC suggests extension of deadline for Parliament’s ad hoc committee

The African National Congress (ANC) has suggested that the deadline of Parliament’s ad hoc committee to submit its report must be extended by a month.

The committee was established to investigate allegations of threats to national security, following allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of serious corruption in the criminal justice system.

The committee has a deadline of October 31 and by then its report must be handed to the National Assembly.

The committee has, in previous meetings, concluded that Mkhwanazi would be the first witness. But, due to commitments with the judicial commission of inquiry, he is only available after September 24.

ANC MP, Xola Nqola, suggested they hold off on hearings and apply for an extension to the Speaker.

Meanwhile, evidence leader Advocate Norman Arendse SC says all of the prospective witnesses called to appear before Parliament’s ad hoc committee have been willing and cooperative.

He was appointed by Parliament as evidence leaders and will be assisted by advocates Maria Makhaoetsi and Lerato Zikalala.

The committee has extended invitations to Mkhwanazi, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, Minister Senzo Mchunu, Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya and Acting Police Minister Fairoz Cachalia and his two Deputy Ministers.

Arendse confirmed: “Consultations took place with Masemola on Friday and the responses have been positive.”
