The African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) has decided not to dissolve its Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provincial structures and has instead opted to call it the reconfiguration of the two Provincial Executive Councils (PEC) within the framework of the party’s constitution.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula says the party has agreed that not taking any action is not a solution to the issue of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
He was briefing the media on the outcomes of the NEC meeting this weekend, where the party’s poor performance in the two provinces in the 2024 elections was discussed.
Mbalula says the ANC has no choice but to intervene in the provincial structures, as it fears it may lose Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal the same way it lost the Western Cape to the Democratic Alliance.
He says the unity of the ANC must be the objective when dealing with KZN and Gauteng. He adds that the party leadership in the two provinces must make a proposal on the reconfiguration of the leadership to the National Working Committee in a week’s time.

‘Reconfiguration’
“Reconfiguration means we are going to tamper with the leadership of the ANC. It’s very clear,” explains Mbalula.
The party’s national officials will meet next week Monday to finalise the reconfiguration of the provincial structures after which members of the ANC in both provinces will be addressed.
The national officials are split on the nature of the reconfiguration and on whether it means disbandment or not.
The ANC ‘s constitution stipulates that a structure can be suspended for three months or dissolved and an interim Provincial Task Team put in place. -Additional reporting by Samkele Maseko
