The African National Congress (ANC) has joined the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the family of Chris Hani in requesting government to open an inquest into his murder.

Hani, who was the SACP general secretary, was killed at his home in Boksburg in the east of Johannesburg in April 1993.

His convicted murderer Janusz Walus is expected to arrive in his country of origin, Poland, this morning.

He left South Africa on a flight from the O.R. Tambo International Airport last night following government’s announcement of his deportation.

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula told the media in Johannesburg yesterday that Hani’s killer did not come clean about his motive.

“The murderer of our leader Janusz Walus will be released from jail taking with him to his homeland the truth of this assassination of our leader comrade Chris Hani and his release without a full confession of his actions and conspiracies remains an injustice. We call on the conscious of Walusz to tell the whole truth for a comprehensive inquiry into the assassination of Comrade Chris Hani. South Africa is no home for assassin Janus Walusz must leave the country now.”

Meanwhile, the Umkhonto we Sizwe Liberation War Veterans have also added their voice to calls on government to open an inquest into Hani’s murder.

Convenor Dan Hato says inquests into the murders of other anti-apartheid activists have helped to get those responsible prosecuted and to give families closure.

Hato says the inquest would help to identify the mastermind of Hani’s murder.

“We definitely understand that he wasn’t alone, there were quite a number of people. This was an orchestrated murder that was discussed somewhere. That is exactly what we want to get to.”
