The Ditsobotla Local Municipality event
The African National Congress (ANC) in North West has expelled the former Mayor of the Lichtenburg-based Ditsobotla local municipality Mazwi Moruri, as well as the former Speaker Jarious Modisakeng.
The two were among the 10 councilors who were hauled before the party’s provincial disciplinary committee for, among others, bringing the party into disrepute. The 10 ANC members faced five charges, including failure to implement a decision to elect Molefe Morutse as the Mayor, sowing divisions in the caucus and breaching their deployment contracts.
“The 10 accused members allegedly defied an official directive issued by the provincial executive committee of the ANC to support Molefe Morutse as the party’s candidate of the position of the mayor. There were 10 members charged as I said when I started, eight did attend the disciplinary hearing, two attended the first hearing then the second hearing they absented themselves. Therefore, there was an application for separation of the proceedings then the committee proceeded with the eight members,” says Prof Vuyo Peach, Chairperson: ANC Provincial Disciplinary Committee, NW.
Of the 10 ANC members who appeared before the provincial disciplinary committee, two were booted out of the party.
“The provincial disciplinary committee finds that comrade Mazwi Moriri and Jarious Modisakeng be expelled from the ANC with effect from 16 July 2025. That comrade Bafana Nkutha, Sibusiso Thamaga, Aaron Motloung, Titus Maxongo, Dolf Ngake, Koos Rabeng pay compensation of R30 000 each to the provincial executive committee of the ANC with 60 days of this judgment,” Peach explains.
The party says it will formally furnish the municipality with a notice of expulsion of the two.
“In the case the accused in these matters are not making any appeals, the ANC will ask the municipality to declare a vacancy and then in this instance these are ward councilors. We will definitely go to by-elections. I must indicate that on our side we accept the decisions of the PDC and then we are happy with the process that has unfolded,” says Louis Diremelo, ANC Secretary: NW.
Moruri and Modisakeng have declined to comment, as they had not been formally informed about the disciplinary committee’s decision.
