The ANC in Johannesburg is set to kick off its 16th Regional Conference today. The conference, originally scheduled for September, was delayed for months due to allegations of division, factionalism, and manipulation among members.
Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero is expected to contest the regional chairperson position against Loyiso Masuku, a member of the mayoral committee for finance.
In June, the ANC Gauteng provincial task team disbanded the party’s Johannesburg regional executive committee, which was led by Morero.
The three-day regional conference follows the withdrawal of a motion of no confidence against Morero in the Johannesburg Council.
It also comes after the ANC’s national leadership, through Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, set a deadline for regions to hold their conferences as the date for the party’s 5th National General Council approaches.
The ANC National General Council will take place in Ekurhuleni next week, while the Johannesburg regional conference is scheduled to conclude on Friday.
