African National Congress (ANC) Greater Johannesburg Regional Chairperson Dada Morero addresses the party’s 113 anniversary in Alexandra on February 2, 2025.
African National Congress (ANC) Johannesburg Regional Chairperson Dada Morero says they are not going to embark on a popular contest of throwing names around for the 2026 Local Government Elections.
Some political parties have already announced their candidates for the city’s mayoral position.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced that its Federal Executive Chair, Helen Zille, will be running for Joburg Mayor, while the Patriotic Alliance (PA) has thrown the hat of its Deputy President, Kenny Kunene, into the ring.
ActionSA is holding its cards close to its chest, but there is an indication that its president, Herman Mashaba, could be its candidate.
Morero says there is a process in the ANC before they can talk about names.
He says, “The ANC has a different process its likely to start around February to March, where the ANC will then first announce what we call the selection of candidates guidelines and once that has gone out and accepted and adopted by the NEC (National Executive Committee), then it means it will then give us exactly at what point we are going to convene BGMs (Branch General Meetings) to start the selection process.”
Morero says, “Once the selection of candidates has been completed, the ANC then undergoes a process of the selection of the mayors. It can be done immediately after the elections, or it can still be done before an election.”
