ANC, FF Plus to meet over budget deadlock threatening GNU

Leaders of the African National Congress (ANC) and the Freedom Front Plus are scheduled to meet today to discuss the budget impasse which is threatening the government of national unity.

On Saturday, leaders of the ANC and the Democratic Alliance (DA) met in Sandton, Johannesburg.

The bone of contention is the ANC-proposed increase in Value-Added Tax, which is included in the 2025 budget that Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana delivered in Parliament last month.

‘MK Party is not desperate’

The uMkhonto we Sizwe Party says it is not desperate to join the government of national unity.

The party’s statement comes as the ANC engages various parties inside and outside of the GNU to find alternatives to its proposed VAT increase.

MK Party Secretary-General Floyd Shivambu says they will not get involved in the dynamics of the GNU, as they don’t support it.

He spoke to the media on the sidelines of a party function in Soweto on Saturday.

“The ANC has written to us; we have responded to say we don’t want to get involved in the affairs of the so-called GNU. Let them deal with their issues. We have got the relevant platforms as the MK, where we are going to articulate our position as to what is to be done in terms of the budgeting framework in terms of the money bills that are still going to serve in parliament. But one thing is for sure: as long as the GNU includes the DA and all these other aspects, we are not going to allocate any budget as MK to representatives of oppression to expend on land or basic education. We will never support that budget.”
