An ANC delegate walks past a banner during the 5th National General Council
Political analyst Dr. Levy Ndou says this year’s African National Congress (ANC) January 8 Statement will be significantly different from previous years, as it faces mounting political and governance pressures. The ANC will celebrate its 114th anniversary at Moruleng Stadium in the North West next Saturday.

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa will outline the party’s priorities for the year ahead, with a sharp focus on reclaiming lost ground in the upcoming 2026 local government elections. Ndou says the party should use its anniversary to outline a clear plan to improve governance and public confidence.
“The ANC, in my view, must therefore be able to develop a general program that must talk to all the members of the ANC and the ordinary citizens at large in terms of what is it that the ANC has in store for them in 2026. We also do know that the ANC will be going to its policy conference, but the clear areas of priorities in terms of approaching local government elections is one of the issues that the National Executive Committee should be able to outline to their people.”
