The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape says the slain party councillor, Lazola Gungxe, was a dedicated member of the party and a consummate public servant who always put the interest of the people first.
Gungxe was shot and killed by two unknown assailants shortly after a meeting he had coordinated in Crossroads on the Cape Flats Tuesday afternoon.
ANC regional secretary in the Dullah Omar Region, Mvusi Mdala, says he had called the meeting to discuss electricity.
“He’s one of the dedicated public representatives that we have as the ANC in the City of Cape Town. He could not say no to any task that was given to him. As much as people understood the challenge in terms of violent crime in the area, when calls were made for him not to set a foot again there, he said if I can’t do it who will do it because I am a leader, I must go and serve the community.”
Meanwhile, the Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, has condemned the shooting.
Marais says the killing is deeply concerning and has urged police to act quickly to find those responsible.
“I extend our sincere condolences to councillor Gungxe’s family, friends, colleagues, and the community he served during this extremely difficult time. I encourage residents to make use of these anonymous reporting platforms so that those responsible for this tragic act can be held accountable.”
