The African National Congress is adamant that there is no leadership contest in the party.
However, speculation is mounting that there is a plot to remove ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa.
A few days ago in Parliament, the party’s Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, urged the public to stop mistaking the ANC’s National General Council (NGC) for a leadership contest.
The NGC will get underway in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, on Monday.
A National General Council cannot remove any elected leader. It cannot change any policy perspective the ANC has chosen. However, it can ultimately rectify some of the decisions that have been made by the ANC’s National Executive Committee, such as that of the Government of National Unity and the constitution of it, which can ultimately be reviewed by the National General Council of the African National Congress.
The ANC is deeply fragmented: analyst
Political analyst Professor Mazwe Majola has described the ANC as deeply fragmented.
He says the ANC faces deep internal divisions, declining membership, and weak party structures.
According to Professor Majola, this could limit the ANC’s ability to restore public confidence and strengthen its position ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.
“They restore trust, they deal with this original trust between them and the people, and also they need to make sure that they are trusted in terms of people wanting to vote for them. Can they serve people? That’s a million-dollar question. Can someone there say, is this organisation capable of serving me as a citizen of this country?”
