ANC demands SACP cadres recuse from its election structures

One of the decisions taken by the African National Congress (ANC)’s National General Council is that South African Communist Party (SACP) members must recuse themselves from ANC discussions on strategy and tactics ahead of the local government polls.

This is until both parties reach an agreement on the communist party’s decision to contest the 2026 local government elections alone.

The ANC’s NGC ended in Boksburg, Johannesburg, on Thursday.

The ANC has been concerned about the SACP’s decision, as many of its members have dual membership of both parties, with implications for which party to vote and campaign for.

Ramaphosa says that he is confident that they will solve their problem with SACP. “As we continue to engage particularly on our strategies and tactics for running the elections, they should recuse themselves and may I add that a number of them themselves feel that they will be conflicted and they are recusing themselves until we solve this problem, and I have confidence that we will solve it.”

Political analyst Dr Levy Ndou says the SACP appears solid in its decision to contest the election independently.

Ndou adds that some members will have to choose whether they are indeed ANC or SACP.
