ANC defends Didiza’s decision not to subpoena Mogotsi and O’Sullivan

The ANC Study Group on the Ad Hoc Committee has defended National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza’s decision not to issue a subpoena to forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan and businessman Brown Mogotsi, saying the attacks on her are misdirected.

The two have requested to testify virtually citing serious security concerns.

Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee is investigating allegations of misconduct and infiltration of the criminal justice system. The committee had sought to compel both Mogotsi and O’Sullivan to appear physically for testimony.

Some committee members have raised concerns saying the impasse is now threatening to derail the work of the committee as the deadline rapidly approaches.

ANC Chief Whip and member of the Ad Hoc Committee, Mdumiseni Ntuli, says the Speaker is not to blame.

“You can’t blame the Speaker for advising us to follow the correct procedure. This accusation that the Speaker may be acting in a way that others in the past might have done, which were deemed by certain people not being in the best interest of RSA, is in in this case completely misguided. If we follow process other than what the Speaker has said, I can tell if Mr. Mokgotsi and Mr. O’Sullivan decided to take us to court, we are going to be an embarrassment in that court. I don’t think we should fail to accept responsibility as a committee and begin to appropriate those problems to the Office of the Speaker It’s an unjustified attack on the Speaker,” explains Ntuli.
