ANC National Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri says the party has met with its Government of National Unity (GNU) partner, the Democratic Alliance (DA), to discuss the reconfiguration of the coalition.
The meeting took place in Sandton amid growing tensions between the two parties over key national issues, including the budget, the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill, the National Health Insurance (NHI) and Expropriation legislation.
These differences have sparked speculation about the DA’s continued role in the GNU, with internal ANC voices also reportedly calling for the DA to be removed. Bhengu-Motsiri emphasized that the purpose of the meeting was to reset the coalition’s dynamics and build a more structured and stable governance arrangement.
“We said that we are hitting the reset button and part of which is to have a stronger GNU, whoever is in that GNU in the final analysis, a stronger GNU governed by rules, rules that work, governed by certain protocols and ensuring a strong measure of accountability. The existing mechanisms [are] being assessed, including the GNU clearing house, establishing other mechanisms to strengthen the stability of the GNU, whoever is in that government,” Bhengu-Motsiri said.
The ANC has reiterated its openness to engaging with any political party that is willing to work toward the betterment of South Africa.
