ANC activist Mlungisi Griffiths Mxenge inquest to resume this week

The inquest into the death of human rights lawyer and ANC activist Mlungisi Griffiths Mxenge is expected to resume in the Pietermaritzburg High Court this week.

Mxenge was kidnapped and murdered by members of the security branch in Umlazi in the south of Durban in 1981.

His body, with more than 40 stab wounds, was found dumped next to a soccer field.

Three members of the Security Branch were convicted of Mxenge’s murder in the Durban High Court in 1997, while two were acquitted.

The inquest, which began on the 14th of April, is looking into the circumstances that led to Mxenge’s death.

National prosecuting authority spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, explains why the matter was postponed when it first sat in April: “It was twice remanded due to issues of legal representation of the former members of the Security Branch to be legally represented during the proceedings. On the recent sitting in June this year, the court advised that should the processes of legal representation not be finalised by October 9, the representatives of both the SAPS Legal and the State Attorney must appear before the court and advise on the reasons for the delay.”
