President Cyril Ramaphosa with his deputy Paul Mashatile, ministers and members of the National Dialogue Eminent Persons Group during the first inaugural meeting at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on July 11, 2025.
Political analyst Kenneth Mokgatlhe has criticised the foundations that have withdrawn from the upcoming National Convention saying their decision has raised concerns.
Several legacy foundations including the Thabo Mbeki, Steve Biko and FW de Klerk announced their withdrawal last week.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed that the event will proceed as scheduled on Friday despite the foundations’ exiting.
Mokgatlhe says the foundations have no regard for public outrage over the cost of holding the event.
He says, “I’m a little bit worried with the attitude of the foundations because they also do not show some regard because they also understand that the government is not in a good financial state. This shows that it may be futile at the end of the day because we can see that it’s more of a performative exercise rather than substantial exercise that could transform the lives of South Africans,” he adds. –Reporting by Kholo Tefo.
