An all-female law enforcement operation is being conducted in the Umgungundlovu District at Pietermaritzburg, targeting the most dangerous crime hotspots.
Provincial Operation Basadi, which is a crime prevention programme as part of Women’s Month, has seen female officers lead roadblocks, compliance inspections, suspect raids and other intelligence-driven operations.
The district has a high number of murder cases and other violent crimes like cash-in-transit heists.
“All the districts we have 11 district women have been very active in terms of the operations. There have been several operations with great success that we have achieved this month. And also, we have focused with our FCS unit especially on family violence, as GBV is a very real issue. And in terms of the growth of women in our organisation, there’s been a remarkable improvement. We’ve got our first deputy provincial commissioner in the history of KZN, that is Major General Makoba. We have five female district commissioners that are running districts,” says Francis Slambert, the Head of the police’s Women’s Network in KwaZulu-Natal.

Police say at least 11 people have been arrested in various multidisciplinary operations in the Umngungundlovu District in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
The operations were led by female police officers as part of Women’s Month.
Crime hotspots like the Plessislaer and Alexandra policing areas were targeted.
“One of the suspects is linked to three cases: two rapes and one attempted murder. We have made several arrests for the theft of vehicles. Yes, we are still busy, we are still counting and getting our successes together, and we are happy with all the actions that we have executed. When you are dealing with stations like Plessislaer and Alexandra, intelligence is most importance. So, we had intelligence from early morning, and they have been gathering intelligence for us. So, we’ve got targets we are going to hit,” says Slambert.
