The Usindiso building fire in Johannesburg gutted the building and left 76 people dead in 2023.
The state is expected to cross-examine alleged arsonist Sthembiso Mdlalose on Wednesday, who stands accused of deliberately setting the hijacked Usindiso building on fire, killing 76 people.
The case is being heard by the Johannesburg High Court sitting at Palm Ridge.
Mdlalose faces 76 counts of murder, 86 counts of attempted murder and arson.
During his testimony last week, Mdloase dropped a bombshell that every confession that he ever made was a lie.
Mdlolose says he lied because he was tired of living in the streets and wanted proper accommodation, food and to be rehabilitated in prison as he was heavily addicted to drugs.
Before moving into the hijacked Usindiso building, Mdlalose had been living in the streets and using drugs for three years.
He says he knew that lying to that extent was going to guarantee him a spot in jail.
