The trial of 13 men accused of charges including the murder of so-called ‘steroid king’ Brian Wainstein is expected to resume today in the High Court in Cape Town after an application for a trial within a trial.

The defence for alleged underworld figures Jerome ” Donkie” Booysen and Andre Naudé wants to test the admissibility of cellphone recordings and transcripts that the state intends to present as evidence.

Communications between the now-deceased Mark Lifman, Booysen and Naude allegedly formed part of an investigation into a drug syndicate operating from Bellville.

Fifty-seven-year-old Lifman was gunned down at the Garden Route Mall in George a day before he was scheduled to appear in court.
