“Alleged assassination attempt on Mashatile a fabricated story”

The Activists and Citizens Forum has labelled the alleged attempted assassination of Deputy President Paul Mashatile as a fabricated story.

Reports emerged over the weekend that the Deputy President’s vehicle was shot at four times on the windscreen.

The forum argues that if the alleged incident did happen, the African National Congress (ANC) would have been informed about it.

This follows comments from the party’s Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula that they didn’t get any detailed report from Mashatile’s office about the alleged incident.

Spokesperson for the forum, Dennis Bloem, says Mashatile is seeking sympathy votes in the ANC ahead of the party’s 2027 National Conference.

“If it was the truth, the country could have been turned upside down by the security forces and by the ANC itself. The ANC could’ve made a big noise but up until now, they are quiet. That’s why we are saying this is a cooked-up story.”

Meanwhile, ANC Treasurer-General Dr Gwen Ramokgopa has poured cold water on reports that the alleged assassination attempt is linked to the party’s 2027 National Conference.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of the ANC’s Northern Cape Provincial Conference yesterday, Ramokgopa called on law enforcement agencies to investigate these serious allegations.
