Alleged arsonist Mdlalose says he was nowhere near Usindiso building

Alleged arsonist Sthembiso Mdlalose, accused of setting the hijacked Usindiso building on fire that claimed 76 lives, says he was nowhere near the building on that tragic night.

Mdlalose faces 76 counts of murder, 86 counts of attempted murder and arson.

He says he gave false statements because he wanted to be imprisoned so that he could get shelter and food.

Since his arrest, Mdlalose has given different versions of what led to the fire. He says he wants the country to know the truth as to what happened that fateful night.

“The truth is that during the incident I was not even around the building, I was about four blocks away sleeping on the streets next to a flat called fire station. I only heard about this incident the following day, so I also went to the scene and saw what transpired that is the truth,” says Mdlalose.
