All legal channels to be explored to retrieve Lily Mine workers: Mashaba

ActionSA President Herman Mashaba has committed to exploring all legal channels to ensure the retrieval of the three Lily Mine workers whose remains are still trapped underground.

Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi and Solomon Nyirenda were in the lamp room container which fell into a sinkhole when the mine collapsed in 2016.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the incident.

ActionSA led an event in remembrance of the trio outside the mine in Louws Creek in Mpumalanga.

Mashaba accuses the justice system of colluding with mine management to ruin the lives of the families of the mine workers.

“They know the consequences of the retrieval of that container. They forget the fact that they are destroying lives. They have not just destroyed lives of the three of Pretty, Yvonne and Solomon, they disrupted the lives of the families for eight years. I’m sure all of you witnessed their living conditions for eight years and I have, on numerous occasions, said to the family, can you please go home, leave it to us, go and resume your normal life. Then they’re saying, we appreciate what you’re doing for us, but we’re not going to leave this place.”
