All accused in Meyiwa trial allowed to wear leg iron protective pads

The State in the Senzo Meyiwa trial has resolved to allow all five accused on trial for the 2014 murder of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa to wear protective pads over their leg irons.

The decision comes after a delay in proceedings at the High Court in Pretoria where accused No.: 3, Mthobisi Mncube, cited physical pain and human rights violations.

His legal counsel, Charles Mnisi, argued the directive from Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Services compromised his client’s dignity and that Mncube’s human rights were violated.

The trial has adjourned till Tuesday morning.

State Prosecutor George Baloyi says all the accused will continue to wear protective pads on the leg irons throughout the remainder of the trial.

“There has been an amicable resolution to the issue that occupied the court this morning. The Correctional Services has decided to restore the ankle pad; they are doing so. In terms of progress in the case, as we speak, the accused are wearing those pads,” says Baloyi.
