Alcaraz, Djokovic dumped out of US Open first round mixed doubles

Veteran doubles experience overcame singles stardom on the opening day of the US Open tennis tournament’s re-imagined mixed doubles event, which kicked off with a new format and fans.

Men’s world number two Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and 24-time Grand Slam singles champion Novak Djokovic were both dumped out in the first round.

Alcaraz, who teamed up with former women’s singles champion Emma Raducanu of Britain, suffered a 4-2, 4-2 loss to top seeds Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula of the US.

The American duo then advanced to the semi-finals after dispatching Russians Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva 4-1, 4-1.

Medvedev and Andreeva had begun their campaign by knocking out the Serbian duo of Djokovic and Olga Danilovic 4-2, 5-3.
