AIC’s Margaret Arnolds elected City of Joburg Speaker

The City of Johannesburg council has re-elected Margaret Arnolds as the Speaker of Council.

The AIC candidate was elected by 137 votes. She was nominated alongside the Democratic Alliance’s Alex Christians who received 68 votes.

And the UDM’s Yongama Zingela received 5 votes.

The position became vacant after ActionSA’s Nobuhle Mthembu was ousted in a vote of no confidence.

Arnolds was able to reclaim the position with the backing of the ANC and some minority parties. But the ATM and Al Jama-ah broke rank and nominated a UDM candidate.

However, the largest party in the government of Local Unity in Johannesburg, the ANC, remained confident Arnolds would ultimately be elected.

Arnolds’ position as Finance MMC has become vacant.

The mayor is expected give an update on who will replace Arnolds as Finance MMC.
